09/07/2025 - Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR): Updated recommendations on food contact materials

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has revised its recommendations for materials with food contact and published them in the new format EXPLAINED IN MORE DETAIL.

Materials and objects that come into contact with food can transfer certain substances to the food. However, these substance transfers must be so minimal that they do not pose health risks to consumers. A wide variety of materials are used for this purpose – such as plastic, paper, cardboard, silicone, or rubber.

In addition to content updates, the recommendations were also supplemented with further reading references and literature on analytical methods. The underlying database with recommendations has existed since 1958 and contains lists of substances as well as manufacturing conditions for suitable materials. This information is intended to inform manufacturers and consumers about safe applications. Additionally, the BfR answers frequently asked questions about food contact materials.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct investigations on food contact materials, such as migration analyses. For questions, our customer advisors are very happy to assist you.
