Numerous cosmetic products contain perfume to mask the raw material odor of the other ingredients or to be more appealing to end consumers. All perfume oils used in this process generally possess a so-called IFRA certificate.

The IFRA has been acting as an association of the perfume industry since 1973, providing the basis for the safe use of perfume oils in cosmetics. It also imposes restrictions or sets maximum usage concentrations for perfume ingredients as soon as necessary due to new scientific findings. 

IFRA standards form the globally accepted foundation for the safe use of fragrance ingredients and are an essential part of the IFRA Code of Practice.
