Current Food Warning: Undeclared Allergen in Pesto
In August, a recall of pesto was initiated. The reason for this was the detection of the undeclared allergen mustard.
Allergens must be labeled. If a food manufacturer uses allergen-containing ingredients in production, they must always declare so, even for loose goods, for example in bakeries or catering services. However, a notice is not mandatory if the manufacturer does not intentionally add the allergen but cannot exclude contamination. This occurs, for example, if they process allergen-containing ingredients in the same facility. For many products, providers nonetheless print the notice “May contain traces of...” or “May contain...” to protect themselves against compensation claims.
People suffering from a food allergy should avoid allergens in food. Even the smallest traces of allergens can lead to health issues. Further information is listed in Annex II of the EU Food Information Regulation (FIR) Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 concerning consumer information on food.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct tests for allergens. We deliver fast and reliable results.
