A new dossier by the German Environment Agency (UBA) deals with the topic of plastics in the environment and presents figures and background information on this current issue. The topic of plastics and their entry into the world's oceans is widely discussed, especially due to the subject of microplastics.

The entry occurs, among other things, via

• Waste and wastewater
• Tires and tire abrasion
• Cosmetic products

It is crucial to minimize the entry, as plastics are often very persistent and hardly decompose. These substances are ingested by humans through food (fish). Possible long-term effects are still unclear.
