Allergenic Fragrances in Cosmetic Products
Perfume intolerances and skin reactions to certain perfume ingredients are widespread, with the number of affected individuals steadily increasing.
The Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 on cosmetic products requires the declaration of a total of 26 fragrance components that may be relevant in terms of sensitization. The declaration requirement for products that remain on the skin (leave-on products) is at an amount of 10 ppm (mg/kg), for products that are rinsed off (rinse-off products) at 100 ppm (mg/kg).
The declaration is legally mandatory from the aforementioned amounts and is continuously monitored by retailers, the industry, and magazines such as Öko-Test and Stiftung Warentest.
