Allergenic Fragrance Ingredients in Cosmetics

Several fragrances in cosmetics must be declared when exceeding a certain level (from 10ppm in leave-on products, from 100ppm in rinse-off products). This is regulated via Annex 3 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

Individual fragrances such as Lyral (Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene-Carboxaldehyde), Lilial (Butylphenyl Methylpropional), as well as Atranol and Chloratranol are prohibited and must not be detectable in cosmetics. Fragrances that are not declared are repeatedly detected.

The BAV Institute within the international Tentamus Laboratory Group tests all declarable and prohibited fragrances.
