Allergens in Food – 2020 Report by the CVUAs Baden-Württemberg
The Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Offices (CVUAs) of Baden-Württemberg have published the report on the investigation of allergens in food for the year 2020 on their website. The focus was on foods with "free-from" claims. These can pose acute health risks for allergy sufferers if they contain allergens.
In 2020, eight out of 1713 samples examined by the CVUAs were assessed as potentially harmful to health due to detectable allergens. These were detections of mustard, soy, almond, peanut, and walnut. In all cases, allergy sufferers could be affected by the labeling of the food. In addition, high levels of gluten were detected in products labeled as "gluten-free". Compared to previous years, the proportion of detected but unlabeled allergens has slightly increased (2020: 12.2%; 2019: 10.2%, 2018: 12%).
The assessment of allergen detections is based on certain assessment values published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). The latest assessment values can be found here.
