Antibiotic-resistant bacteria in ready-to-eat salads
In a press release, the BfR, together with the Julius Kühn Institute, referred to a current study on the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in ready-to-eat plant-based foods such as ready-to-eat salads and herbs.
In one study, resistance genes against tetracycline in Escherichia coli were investigated, and corresponding positive evidence was provided. Since these antibiotics are used in animal husbandry, corresponding resistances in intestinal bacteria can develop in the animals' intestines, which are then released onto the fields through manure fertilizers, the detection of such antibiotic-resistant bacteria in raw plant-based foods is the logical consequence.
Now, the actual health risk to humans when consuming antibiotic-resistant bacteria needs to be assessed, as illnesses from the consumption of such contaminated foods are not yet known.
