The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published the results of the European research project "CarbaCamp" on July 10, 2026. The study examined the sensitivity of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli to carbapenems – a group of antibiotics mainly used to treat severe bacterial infections.
Campylobacter is one of the most common bacterial causes of foodborne illnesses in Europe. Infections are often associated with inadequately heated poultry meat, cross-contaminations during food preparation, or contaminated water.
Isolates from 16 European countries examined
For the CarbaCamp project, more than 2,300 Campylobacter isolates from 16 European countries were requested. The isolates came from surveillance of livestock as well as from humans. A total of 1,889 isolates were tested for their sensitivity to various antibiotics using the agar diffusion test.
From this collection, 600 isolates were selected for further determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. The researchers specifically examined the sensitivity to the carbapenems ertapenem, imipenem, and meropenem. In addition, selected isolates were genetically characterized to investigate possible resistance mechanisms and relationships.
Uniform assessment only possible to a limited extent so far
The starting point of the project was indications of reduced sensitivity of certain Campylobacter isolates to carbapenems. Ertapenem was therefore included in the European resistance monitoring for Campylobacter in 2021.
A challenge lies in the fact that no sufficiently harmonized epidemiological cut-off values are currently available for the evaluation of the carbapenems tested in Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. These so-called ECOFF values help to distinguish bacteria of the natural wild-type population from isolates with acquired or altered resistance characteristics.
The CarbaCamp project provides an extensive European data basis to better assess the distribution of sensitivity, derive appropriate cut-off values, and compare the examination methods used. Possible differences between the two Campylobacter species and different animal species were also considered.
Monitoring antibiotic resistance along the food chain
Antibiotic resistances are a common challenge for human medicine, animal health, and food safety. The One-Health approach therefore jointly considers humans, animals, food, and the environment. A harmonized surveillance can make noticeable developments visible at an early stage and help to better understand the spread of resistant bacteria.
For food companies, avoiding contamination with Campylobacter remains the most important measure. Particularly important are effective operational hygiene, the prevention of cross-contaminations, and appropriate microbiological controls.
