BAV Food Symposium for Increased Food Safety
Food safety is a much-discussed topic. For two days, representatives of the German food industry, politics, and monitoring met at the BAV Institute in Offenburg to learn about the latest developments and find joint solutions.
Conference leader Dr. Gerd Fricke, head of the responsible department of the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), welcomed the organizers' initiative to provide a basis for constructive dialogue. Only together can food safety be advanced, he said.
A central topic of the symposium was food fraud. As a task included in the new EU Control Regulation, the industry faces the question of how adulteration of raw materials can be detected. Here, the manufacturer has a duty, which is by no means an easy task. Because what fraudsters come up with, one would need to think of first, said Dr. Andreas Daxenberger from TÜV SÜD. The head of the Chemical and Veterinary Analytical Institute (CVUA) Karlsruhe, Dr. Stefan Walch, presented the latest methodological possibilities, while noting that these are complicated and cost-intensive methods. He appealed to the companies to collectively fight against fraudsters, as official investigations require the cooperation of manufacturers. Without reference material, Walch noted, it is not possible to identify counterfeit ingredients, and this can only be provided by the manufacturers.
Representing the German economy, Dr. Marcus Girnau, Deputy Chief Executive of the Federation for Food Law and Food Science (BLL), assured this collaboration and advocated for improving the exchange of information between businesses and authorities. Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Jany, member of the expert committees of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and conference president, valued the event as a link between science and implementation. Events like these create a good basis for the joint efforts of production and monitoring to deliver safe food to consumers.
