BfR Opinion 021/2020 of 21.04.2020 on the Risk of Bacterial Pathogens on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables from Wastewater

The opinion considers interesting aspects and results, stating among other things:

The risk to the general population of contracting a salmonellosis or STEC infection after consuming raw fresh fruit or vegetables in Germany is currently considered low.

Even the risk of pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems in Germany contracting listeriosis after consuming raw fruit and vegetables is still considered low despite the severity of the illnesses. However, if plants used for fruit or vegetable production are irrigated with treated wastewater and later consumed raw in whole or in part, these risks could increase.

Consumers are advised to thoroughly wash fresh fruit and vegetables with drinking water before consumption to reduce the surface germ content and protect against foodborne infections.”
