BVL publishes "Trend Report Zoonoses" for 2023

Zoonoses are infectious diseases that can spread between animals (vertebrates) and humans through various transmission routes, such as direct contact or via vectors. The most common foodborne zoonoses in Germany in 2023 include campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, and yersiniosis. Monitoring these diseases is crucial as contamination can occur at all stages of the food chain.

In the European Union, the monitoring of zoonoses and their agents is governed by Directive 2003/99/EC. Each member state is required to collect data on zoonoses and antibiotic resistance and report it to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In Germany, this reporting is supported by the national Infection Protection Act (IfSG), which establishes specific reporting procedures for infectious diseases, including zoonoses, and coordinates the data collection by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) has now published the "Zoonoses Trend Report 2023". This report contains significant information on the prevalence of zoonoses requiring monitoring and reflects national efforts to monitor and control these diseases. The BVL, responsible for reporting to EFSA since 2020, also considers reports from official animal health and food monitoring, as well as data from food business operators. The current report ensures that relevant information on infections and agents is included in EU reporting and informs the public about developments in the area of zoonoses.
