May vegetarian products such as "schnitzel," "burger," and the like still be labeled as such?
Vegetarian and vegan foods like "tofu sausage" or "soy schnitzel" are a staple in the daily diet of many people. At the same time, their designations repeatedly lead to disagreements.
Meanwhile, the EU Parliament is also dealing with the issue of labeling plant-based alternatives.
On October 8, 2025, the Members of Parliament voted on an amendment that stipulates terms like "sausage," "schnitzel," or "burger" should be allowed exclusively for products of animal origin in the future. A majority of Members of Parliament voted in favor of banning these designations for vegetarian and vegan products.
However, the regulation is not yet definitively decided. Before it can come into effect, all 27 member states of the European Union must also agree. The Parliament's decision now goes into the next round of negotiations with the EU countries to find a common solution.
