Cereulide in infant formula: another recall of Aptamil and Milumil
Already recalled infant formula of the Aptamil and Milumil brands has apparently re-entered the market. As announced on 12 October 2026, affected batches were still being sold or were accidentally offered again in some Kaufland stores. The reason is a possible contamination with the bacterial toxin Cereulid. The incident highlights the importance of reliable quality controls and consistent traceability along the supply chain.
Cereulid is a heat-stable toxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. It is not detectable by the senses and is not reliably destroyed by common heating or preparation procedures. The toxin can pose a serious health risk, especially for infants.
However, the issue is not limited to infant formula; it also affects numerous other foods, particularly powders, dried products and starch-containing items. Because the mere detection of Bacillus cereus does not reliably indicate the presence of Cereulid, targeted toxin analyses are of great importance for a sound risk assessment.
Cereulid analysis at the BAV Institute
The BAV Institute offers an accredited and validated analysis for Cereulid using LC-MS/MS. This method allows reliable detection of the toxin in different food matrices.
Analyses are carried out as standard within a few days. Express analyses are also possible.
In addition, we offer the following analyses:
- Testing for presumptive Bacillus cereus using ISO procedures or an accredited rapid method within one day
- Testing for Bacillus cereus genes
- Differentiation between Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus cereus
With our analyses we support food manufacturers, importers and distributors in quality assurance and risk assessment.
