Current food warning: Precautionary recall of two frozen berry mixes

In July, as a precaution, two frozen berry mixes were recalled. For one product, contamination with noroviruses could not be excluded, while for the other, hepatitis A viruses were detected during investigations.

Noroviruses are the most common cause of gastrointestinal diseases and are highly contagious in very small amounts. Symptoms usually appear 10 to 50 hours after infection and include sudden severe diarrhea, intense vomiting, and occasionally fever. The illness generally resolves itself within a few days. Infants, young children, and the elderly have an increased risk of more severe courses due to fluid loss.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease caused by hepatitis A viruses and is often transmitted through contaminated food or drinking water. Shellfish, oysters, as well as fruits and vegetables are considered possible sources of infection. The disease usually occurs 15 to 50 days after infection and often begins with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fever. As it progresses, it can lead to jaundice, dark urine, light-colored stools, and severe itching. Symptoms usually last a few days to several weeks. Older individuals and people with liver diseases have an increased risk of severe disease courses.
