Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHexP) in sunscreens

DnHexP is a phthalate compound classified as a plasticizer. Due to its reproductive toxicity, its use in cosmetic products has been prohibited since 2019. Following the investigation after a 2024 human biomonitoring study in which the metabolite of DnHexP, mono-n-hexyl phthalate (MnHexP), was detected in children's urine, the authorised UV filter diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (DHHB) was identified as a source of contamination in cosmetic products. DHHB can be contaminated with DnHexP as a result of manufacturing. Prohibited substances may be present in technically unavoidable residues that are not harmful to health in cosmetic products.

Since then, authorities have increasingly monitored the development of DnHexP levels in DHHB-containing sunscreen products. DnHexP concentrations have declined significantly in recent years. In 2026, measurable levels of DnHexP were found in only about 10% of all samples tested.

The legislator has also taken further steps to minimize this. The amending Regulation (EU) No. 2026/909 to Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 limits the technically unavoidable DnHexP concentration in the raw material DHHB to a maximum of 10 mg/kg.
