First food "Rooibos tea" from Africa receives EU label "protected designation of origin"
As the first food product from Africa, Rooibos tea from South Africa has been allowed to carry the EU label “protected designation of origin” since the end of May 2021. Rooibos tea is also known as “red bush tea” in our region. The requirements for the product are legally prescribed. For example, the aroma and taste of the products must meet certain requirements. The production, drying, and oxidation of Rooibos tea may only take place in certain municipalities in the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces. In addition, specific production steps must be followed.
A protected designation of origin indicates that the product was produced in a precisely defined area according to established procedures. In contrast to the “protected geographical indication”, all processing steps must be carried out in this area. The properties are predominantly influenced by the geographical characteristics and other factors.
You can find more information on the website of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
Permitted, registered, and rejected protected designations can also be found in the EU register eAmbrosia.
