The notifications on www.lebensmittelwarnung.de by federal states and the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) provide an overview of public warnings and information related to food in Germany. The published warnings concern hazardous, disgusting or otherwise non-marketable food.

The number of food warnings in 2019 has once again reached a comparatively high value. By the end of the year, the BVL had issued 172 warnings. This exceeds the number of warnings from the previous year by 8%. Most warnings in 2019 were in the product groups of meat and meat products (26%) and milk and dairy products (15%) (see Fig. 5).

Contamination by microorganisms accounts for the largest share of complaints (36%), followed by foreign bodies (32%) and chemical hazards (28%) (see Fig. 1).

The main causes of food warnings in the biological hazards group are, as in the previous year, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli or EHEC/STEC/VTEC (see Fig. 2).

Recalls due to chemical hazards occurred in 50% of cases due to inadequate labeling of allergens contained. Recalls due to allergens remain at a high level compared to the previous year (see Fig. 3).

Physical hazards were caused by glass in 24% and by plastic parts in 20% of cases. This trend from 2018 was confirmed again in 2019 (see Fig. 4).
