FoodClarity: MilkAlternativeMayNotBeCalled"PlantMilk"

According to the EU Regulation 1308/2013, the designation for dairy products is strictly regulated. The term "milk" may only be used for food products that come from the udder of animals.

Therefore, terms like "milk," "yogurt," or "cheese" are not allowed for products made from oats, soy, or other plants. The label or advertisement of such products must not give the impression that it is a dairy product. For this reason, the Competition Authority saw a clear violation of the EU regulation in the use of the term "milck." The Stuttgart Regional Court confirmed this view. The recent decision once again demonstrates that even references to dairy products should be viewed critically.

We conduct labeling checks as a standard procedure.
