How much cadmium is in cocoa?

Cadmium is a heavy metal that occurs everywhere in the environment. From the soil, cadmium enters plants that are processed into food and animal feed. Consumers primarily ingest cadmium through food. 

Cocoa beans can also absorb toxic heavy metals like cadmium from the soil. 

In South America, some cultivation areas are significantly contaminated with cadmium.

The Contaminants Maximum Levels Regulation (EU) 2023/915 sets limit values for cocoa and chocolate, among others.
