IFRA – Consultation on the 52nd Amendment concluded
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has completed the consultation on the 52nd Amendment to the IFRA Standards. The consultation was launched in December 2025 and included updated guidance on the application of the IFRA Standards, new and revised standards, and the annex "Contributions from Other Sources".
IFRA is of essential importance to the cosmetics industry, as it defines the global safety standard for fragrance materials used.
The new amendment includes, among other things, the following adjustments:
- 48 new Restriction Standards due to a potential risk of dermal sensitization
- 15 revised Restriction Standards based on updated safety assessments by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM)
- A revised standard for musk ketones
- A new specification requirement for acetylated vetiver oil
- Changes to three standards on phototoxicity
Particularly important is the revised furocoumarin standard, which is expected to set the following limits for cosmetics:
- Maximum 1 ppm: leave-on products intended for deliberate sun exposure
- Maximum 5 ppm: all other leave-on products
- Maximum 50 ppm: rinse-off products
The publication of the 52nd Amendment is currently expected in January 2027. We will keep you informed.
