An important part of food labeling is the designation of the food. When choosing this designation, many regulations must be considered. First, of course, the European and national legal regulations must be observed.

If these are not available, the guidelines of the German Food Code can be used. These outline usual compositions for specific designations. The 23 guidelines published so far by the German Food Code Commission are regularly updated and can be accessed online.

 

In addition, guidelines from manufacturer organizations are used. While not legally binding, they reflect the common understanding of the food industry. Various guidelines have been published by the German Food Association.
