Making a mountain out of a molehill – no way!
Several malaria cases and two deaths in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport have brought the question of possible transmission routes into focus. Among other things, the so-called airport or luggage malaria is being discussed, in which infected Anopheles mosquitoes could, for example, be introduced via international travel and goods traffic.
At the same time, the occurrence of certain mosquito species in Germany is changing. The Asian tiger mosquito has now also been detected in several German regions. Mosquitoes are therefore increasingly the focus of monitoring and public health preparedness as possible vectors of various pathogens.
The BAV Institute tracks current developments related to infectious agents and provides information on relevant microbiological and hygiene issues.
