Methyl salicylate in cosmetic products – maximum quantity restriction since December 2022

Since December 2022, the ingredient Methyl Salicylate has been subject to a maximum quantity restriction according to Annex III No. 324 of the Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The European Chemicals Agency has classified Methyl Salicylate as a CMR substance of class 2 (reproductive toxicant).

Annex III lists different maximum amounts depending on the cosmetic product and body part. For example, a maximum concentration of 0.002% applies to eye make-up and make-up removers, 0.03% for lip products, and 0.06% for rinse-off skin products.

Methyl Salicylate is a natural compound that is also found in plants such as wintergreen oil.

Even now, the detection of Methyl Salicylate has led to recalls in the cosmetics industry.
