Microbiological Quality Management (MQM) for cosmetics – a key pillar of product safety

Microbiological Quality Management (MQM) for cosmetics – a key pillar of product safety

An effective MQM is crucial to ensure the safety and quality of cosmetic products throughout their entire lifecycle.

Bacteria, yeasts and molds can contaminate raw materials and finished cosmetic products; in the worst case this can lead to a product recall or withdrawal.

The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 requires manufacturers to provide safe products and to take microbiological quality into account as part of the safety assessment. Therefore, a structured quality management system includes, among other things, the following points:

Furthermore, carrying out preservative efficacy tests (PET) is a crucial component. This procedure assesses the microbiological stability of a product. Testing is usually performed according to ISO 11930, but other methods such as testing according to Ph. Eur. 5.1.3 are also used.

Only an established and functioning MQM helps to place safe cosmetics on the market. It is also important that measures are defined in advance for what to do in the event of contamination.

We provide comprehensive support for the testing and establishment of an MQM system and perform microbiological testing of your products. We also offer on-site appointments to assess the current hygiene status.

Further information on microbiology and hygiene in cosmetics can be found in the publications of the German Society for Cosmetics (DGK)

We look forward to hearing from you!
