New EU maximum levels for 3-MCPD sum and glycidyl fatty acid esters published
With Regulation (EU) 2026/1825, maximum levels for the sum of 3‑MCPD and for glycidyl fatty acid esters in certain composite foods were established for the first time. The new requirements apply from 19 August 2026 and come into force without a transitional period. For weaning foods and weaning oils, the new or lowered maximum levels apply from 1 January 2027.
3‑MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters are considered process contaminants relevant to health that are formed during the processing and heating of foods. They arise particularly during the refining of vegetable oils and fats, and during frying and roasting of fat-containing foods. Because of their potentially harmful properties, these compounds have been the focus of risk assessment for years.
We routinely carry out analyses for the sum of 3‑MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters in our Tentamus laboratories and provide fast, reliable results. If you have any questions, our customer advisors will be happy to assist you.
