As part of a current recall notice, various infant and specialty food products are being precautionarily withdrawn from the market. The reason is the potential detection of Cereulide, a harmful toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The affected products can be identified by specific best-before dates and batch numbers, which have been published in the corresponding consumer information.

Bacillus cereus is a globally widespread, spore-forming microorganism that can particularly be found in dry foods, powders, and starchy products. Due to its spores, the bacterium is very resistant to environmental influences such as heat and dryness and can germinate again and form toxins under favorable conditions. The especially critical element is the heat-stable toxin Cereulide, which is not destroyed even by heating or preparing the food.

Consuming foods containing Cereulide can lead to acute health complaints. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, usually occurring a few hours after consumption. In severe cases, it can lead to liver function disorders and other serious complications. Infants, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals are particularly at risk, as their bodies are more sensitive to toxic exposures.

For preventive consumer protection reasons, it is strongly recommended not to use potentially affected products and to follow the advice of the relevant authorities. Even with an unobtrusive smell or appearance, a health hazard cannot be ruled out, as Cereulide is not detectable by sensory perception.

The BAV Institute points out the importance of preventive quality controls in this context. Our Tentamus Laboratories conduct comprehensive investigations into the microbiological quality of food, including targeted analyses for Bacillus cereus and its toxin production. Such tests contribute significantly to the early detection of potential risks and to ensuring a high level of consumer protection.
