Pseudomonas aeruginosa – a dangerous germ

Due to its pathogenic properties, the germ Pseudomonas aeruginosa is required to be absent in 1g of product according to DIN EN ISO 17516 for cosmetic products. A typical characteristic of this gram-negative bacterium is its extreme resilience to external conditions. It is found in cosmetics and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants wherever sufficient water is available. Particularly critical is the fact that this germ is capable of forming so-called biofilms. This form makes it particularly resistant and results in the detection of the microorganism during release testing being sometimes complicated (no constant detection, but rather detection depending on the detachment of the biofilm, e.g., from pipes).

A sufficient and proper cleaning and disinfection of the water system can prevent this problem. Removing an already formed biofilm proves to be extremely difficult in most cases.

Ensure the microbiological quality of your products, used raw materials, and water, and analyze your products according to the specifications of DIN EN ISO 17516. The BAV Institute is here to assist you with advice and support, as well as in all matters related to cleaning & disinfection.
