Safety Gate Cosmetics Evaluation - August 2026
In the European Union's rapid alert system (Safety Gate), unsafe cosmetics are regularly published and the causes are identified. Publication in the Safety Gate usually leads to a public recall or market withdrawal. In addition to the high costs for the respective manufacturers, reputational damage is also highly relevant.
For August 2026 several notifications were posted. The recall was issued, among other reasons, due to the following problems:
- Detection of PFAS
- Detection of methylchloroisothiazolinone (CIT) and methylisothiazolinone (MIT) in a leave-on product; their use is prohibited in such products
- Detection of formaldehyde, whose use in cosmetics is prohibited
- Use of the banned fragrance butylphenyl methylpropional (trade name: Lilial)
- Claimed SPF (sun protection factor) is not achieved or is entirely missing
- Detection of safrole, which is genotoxic
- Use of prostaglandin analogues in an eye product
Because of the issues mentioned, these products do not comply with the requirements of the European Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009. In addition to analysis of raw materials and the finished product, the preparation of a safety report for each product is also mandatory!
