The EFSA reviews emergency authorizations of neonicotinoids in sugar beet cultivation
The European Commission’s request concerns 21 emergency authorizations of clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and thiacloprid.
Outdoor use was banned in May 2018, and in January 2020, a request for the renewal of thiacloprid's authorization was rejected by the European Commission. The decisions were made following scientific assessments conducted by the EFSA.
The EFSA will assess, considering the specific situation of individual member states and the availability of alternative means to protect sugar beet plants, whether the authorizations are justified. The assessments are expected to be completed in the second half of 2021.
