The state of Baden-Württemberg advocates for an update of the Health Claims Regulation

The state of Baden-Württemberg is advocating in the Bundesrat for the European Union's (EU) regulation on health claims (Health Claims Regulation, HCVO) to be fully applied to botanical substances in the future. For almost ten years, the HCVO has had transitional provisions for so-called botanicals, granting extensive exceptions for this type of plant substances.

Currently, manufacturers of herbal medicines must undergo extensive and costly approval procedures to demonstrate the effectiveness of their medicines. This leads to a significant competitive disadvantage compared to producers of herbal dietary supplements.

The federal initiative aims to ensure that consumers can rely on health claims on products and restore fair competition.
