Vibrios: When warm water becomes a microbiological risk

Warmer waters, higher microbial counts, increased infection risk: The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out in its current FAQ of 4 August 2026 the link between rising water temperatures and infections caused by vibrios.

Vibrios are rod-shaped, mostly salt-tolerant bacteria that occur naturally in salt and fresh water. The bacteria find particularly favorable growth conditions at water temperatures above 20 °C and salt concentrations of about 0.5–2.5%. As water bodies warm, the concentration of vibrios can therefore increase.

Relevant pathogens and routes of infection

Species of particular relevance to humans include Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus and V. cholerae, which can mainly cause diarrheal and wound infections, with V. vulnificus posing a risk of severe courses up to sepsis, especially for immunocompromised individuals.

An infection can occur both through direct contact with contaminated water via tiny skin injuries and through contaminated or insufficiently heated seafood and shellfish. Raw oysters and other bivalves are especially relevant, as shellfish can accumulate vibrios from the water through their filter-feeding activity.

A challenge for microbiology

A particular challenge is species identification. Currently, more than 150 Vibrio species are known. In addition, vibrios can enter a dormant state under stress conditions in which they are microbiologically difficult or impossible to detect. Relevant virulence factors, such as toxin genes in V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus, can also be examined.

With rising water temperatures, microbiological monitoring of vibrios is becoming increasingly important. Especially the combination of higher microbial counts, longer warm periods and vulnerable population groups makes vibrios a relevant issue for food and environmental microbiology. By July 2026, 17 Vibrio infections had already been registered in Germany; two affected persons died after an infection associated with a stay at the Baltic Sea.
