Water activity (aW-value) as a measure for risk assessment of cosmetics
The investigation and analysis of water activity (aW value) in cosmetics is used for product risk assessment from a microbiological standpoint. Since all microorganisms require a certain amount of water for their growth, this determination can provide a risk assessment.
According to the DIN EN ISO 29621, products with an aW value below 0.75 can forego routine microbiological testing. Conversely, products with a value above 0.75 are subject to routine microbiological tests according to the guidelines of DIN EN ISO 17516.
Do you need evidence (e.g., for the safety report) that your product is a low-risk product? Contact us, we look forward to hearing from you.
In addition to water activity determination, the BAV Institute, as part of the Tentamus Laboratory Group, offers all relevant tests for the safety report (preservative challenge test, chemical tests, etc.).
