Yellow mealworm approved as the first insect as a novel food

According to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, novel foods are foods that were not consumed to a significant degree in the EU before 15 May 1997 and belong to a specific category of food. Only novel foods that are approved and listed in the EU Union List may be placed on the market.

Dried mealworms may be sold whole or ground. Additionally, they may be used as an ingredient in various foods, such as cookies or pasta, up to a maximum of 10 percent. As consumption can lead to allergic reactions, a label must indicate that cross-reactions with allergies to crustaceans or house dust mites are possible.
