01/07/2025 - Still Mineral Water in Test

In the latest Ökotest issue from February 2025, the test results of 53 still (organic) mineral waters are presented.

Ökotest criticizes that not all products are as pure as advertised. The carcinogenic heavy metal Chromium(VI) was found in eleven waters. Arsenic, another toxic element, was also detected. A water recommended for infant food contained a noticeable amount of nitrate, which can be converted into health-hazardous nitrite in the body. Particularly problematic are high bacterial counts in the products. In some products, the legal limits (Min/TafelWV) were exceeded, indicating a lack of microbiological purity. In addition, traces of PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals, were found in almost all tested waters; in seven cases even above the EU limit valid from 2026. Other deficiencies include residues of pesticide degradation products, artificial sweeteners, as well as missing warnings of high fluoride content in water for babies.

The conclusion of the test: Still mineral water is not automatically pure – consumers should look closely.
