07/07/2025 - Introduction of maximum levels for nickel in certain foods in Regulation (EU) 2023/915
By July 1, 2025, the Amending Regulation (EU) 2024/1987 will come into force, supplementing the existing Contaminants Regulation (EU) 2023/915. With this, the European Union is introducing, for the first time, mandatory maximum levels for nickel in certain foods.
The new limits apply, among others, to the following product groups:
- Tree nuts
- Root, tuber, bulb, cabbage vegetables, as well as leafy and fruit vegetables
- Fresh herbs
- Soybeans/Edamame
- Stem vegetables
- Seaweed
- Pulses
- Oilseeds (sunflower seeds, peanuts, soybeans)
- Cocoa and chocolate products
- Baby food
- Fruit and vegetable juices
Further maximum levels—specifically for cereals and pseudocereals—are planned for July 2026. Foods that were placed on the market before July 1, 2025, may continue to be sold. This transitional provision is intended to give affected companies time to adapt. An analysis for nickel is advisable to comply with legal requirements, ensure product safety, and minimize potential health risks for consumers.
Our Tentamus laboratories offer regular and precise analyses for nickel contamination in foods. For producers, traders, and importers, this means planning reliability and rapid results.
