24/06/2025 - UV Radiation and Sun Protection

In the 1/2025 issue of the scientific magazine of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, Dr. Inge Paulini, comments on the topic of sunscreen.

Due to climate change, the number of cloudy days in the year is decreasing. Clouds have the ability to partially reflect or scatter UV radiation, resulting in less radiation reaching the earth. This has led to an increasing number of UV-related new cases of skin cancer over the last 30 years.

The best protection against UV radiation is to avoid direct sun, especially the intense midday sun. If direct sun cannot be avoided, long-sleeved clothing, sunglasses, and a hat should be worn. Additionally, applying sunscreen is an important factor. The higher the sun protection factor and the amount applied, the better. Regular reapplication, especially after swimming, is also important to maintain the sun protection factor.

As beautiful as suntanned skin may appear, strictly speaking, it is already a defensive reaction of the skin to reduce UV damage to skin cells.

In early 2024, sunscreens were under discussion because the prohibited contaminant Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DnHexP) or its metabolite Monohexyl Phthalate was detected in children's urine. The BfR confirmed the health safety, as the detected concentrations were very low.
