June 27, 2025 - The German Poison Register (DVR)
With the German Poisoning Register, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is developing a tool that provides an overview of poisoning incidents in Germany for the first time. The register will go live at the beginning of next year and will compile data from individual poison information centers, professional associations, and medical reports.
The aim of the database is the early detection of risks posed by certain substances and product groups, deriving trends in poisoning incidents, and strengthening consumer protection through targeted advice and education, ideally preventing poisoning scenarios directly.
For example, poisoning cases often occur in children due to the ingestion of cleaning agents or toxic plants. For this reason, cleaning agents are often supplemented with the very bitter-tasting compound Denatonium Benzoate (Bitrex®) to ideally prevent ingestion by immediate spitting out.
Also, washing, cleaning, and detergents often display the icons for safe use developed by the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (A.I.S.E.), which are available to manufacturers of these product groups on the EU market free of charge.
