June 30, 2025 - Microbiological examinations of strawberries by LAVES
At the Food and Veterinary Institute Braunschweig/Hannover of LAVES , strawberries from production sites are regularly tested for microbiological quality. This includes both loose and packaged strawberries intended for trade or retail.
In 2024, a total of 24 strawberry samples were tested for Salmonella and the hygiene indicator Escherichia coli. Of these, 10 samples (42%) came from wholesale, eight samples (33%) from Lower Saxony production sites, and six samples (25%) from direct marketers. No Salmonella was detected in any sample, and the tests for Escherichia coli were also negative.
Already in the years 2017 to 2022, a total of 108 strawberry samples were tested for Listeria, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli. All results were inconspicuous, indicating good microbiological quality of the strawberries.
