Analysis of heavy metals in cosmetics and cosmetic raw materials

Several heavy metals are listed as contaminants in Annex 2 of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. The substances from this annex may only be present in cosmetic finished products in technically unavoidable and harmless quantities.

For heavy metals, compounds such as arsenic, antimony, lead, cadmium, and mercury are regulated. However, chromium and nickel can also be of concern.

In 2016, the BVL in Berlin—based on an extensive monitoring program—established maximum recommended levels for these metals. These values are currently used as the state of the art for assessing cosmetic products (also by authorities).

The BAV Institute, as part of the international Tentamus laboratory group, examines the content of heavy metals in both finished products and cosmetic raw materials for you. We also gladly advise you on regulatory questions in this regard.
