The use of preservatives in cosmetic products is regulated in the positive list of the European Cosmetic Regulation EC No. 1223/2009. Only the preservatives listed there may be used for preservation purposes in the corresponding maximum quantities.

Time and again, small amounts of preservatives are detected in cosmetics, which often enter the product through pre-preserved raw materials. Even for small amounts, there is a declaration obligation in the context of the INCI list if detected in the product.
