Inclusion of limits for perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in animal-based foods in the contaminants maximum levels regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are industrial chemicals used in industrial processes and consumer products. Due to their persistent nature, these compounds accumulate in the environment and can enter the food chain.

The reassessment of the health risks posed by PFAS by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and an opinion from the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) make it clear that limits for these potentially carcinogenic substances are urgently needed. As of January 1, 2023, limits for PFAS have been included in Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 for selected animal-based foods such as eggs, fish, and meat.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct tests for PFAS, providing you with fast and reliable results.
