Inclusion of limits for pyrrolizidine alkaloids in teas, herbs, and food supplements in the Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 on maximum levels of contaminants
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are naturally occurring substances in plants. They serve as a defense mechanism against herbivores and enter our food supply through the co-harvesting of PA-containing plant parts. Spices, teas, leafy vegetables, and salads are particularly often affected. However, honey and food supplements can also be contaminated with PA.
As no regulatory limits were previously in place, assessment was possible only based on opinions from the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
As of July 1, 2022, the limit values for PA included in the Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 apply to selected foodstuffs such as herbal teas, teas, food supplements, and dried herbs. Until July 1, the new limit values can be reviewed in the amending regulation (EU) 2020/2040. Due to the long shelf-life of the products concerned, a transitional period applies until December 31, 2023, for products that were legally placed on the market before July 1, 2022.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct analysis for PA. We provide fast and reliable results.
