BVL: Lead in Sausages with Game

The use of lead ammunition in hunting can result in game meat containing lead. Lead was detected in about three-quarters of the 75 tested sausages with game, as reported by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) in its press release on 02.12.2021. A total of seven samples were criticized, six of which were classified as "not suitable for consumption" and one sample even as hazardous to health. Sensitive consumer groups such as children, pregnant women, and women of childbearing age should therefore refrain from consuming game shot with lead ammunition.

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) reached the same conclusion in its opinion No. 040/2011, in which it addressed the same issue. Lead is harmful even in small amounts. Even at low concentrations in the body, it leads to negative health effects. Furthermore, lead accumulates in the organism. It can damage blood formation, internal organs such as the kidneys, as well as the central nervous system, and it accumulates in the bones.
