BVLpublishesresultsoftheOperationOPSONXagainstfoodfraudinhoney
OPSON X is an operation coordinated by Europol and Interpol to combat food fraud. This year's operation focused on misleading and fraudulent practices involving honey.
The possibilities for fraud with honey are very diverse and can affect both labeling and composition:
- Extending with the addition of sugar syrups/cheaper third-country honey,
- Feeding cheaper imported honey or sugar solutions to bees to produce regional honey,
- Addition of enzymes/colorants to mask unauthorized treatment,
- Deception regarding origin/type/variety, including the addition of foreign pollen.
Foreign sugar was detected in three of the 73 honey samples examined in Germany.
