Federal Council decides to extend zoonosis monitoring by 3 years (e.g., salmonellosis, listeriosis)
Foodborne zoonoses such as salmonellosis and listeriosis are infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans through the consumption of contaminated food. Salmonella can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, while listeria can cause severe flu-like symptoms, fever, and in some cases, even life-threatening complications.
The Bundesrat has decided to extend the zoonosis monitoring for another 3 years. With the amendment of the "AVV Zoonosen Lebensmittelkette," data on the occurrence of zoonoses and zoonotic agents along the food chain are to be collected, evaluated, and published. The extension of the monitoring until 2026 serves to fulfill the obligations of the EU Directive 2003/99/EC on the monitoring of zoonoses. Further information can be obtained from the German Association of Independent Testing Laboratories (VUP).
