Nationwide recall of cheese alternatives: Contamination with listeria

Nationwide recall of cheese alternatives: Contamination with listeria

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the manufacturer are warning consumers against consuming a vegan cheese alternative.

“Due to standard post-controls, we had to verify that there could be occasional contamination with listeria in these products,” states the manufacturer's recall notice.

"In the interest of preventive consumer protection and our uncompromising understanding of quality, and in coordination with the relevant authorities, Happy Cheeze GmbH is recalling the following cheese alternatives: Dr. Mannahs Happy White; Dr. Mannahs Happy White with green pepper - batch number 152311 (both products; the batch number can be found on the back label directly under the best-before date).

Consumers can return the affected vegan cheese alternative to the respective point of sale. The purchase price will be fully refunded.

"Listeriosis usually manifests within 14 days after infection with diarrhea and fever. Especially in pregnant women, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems, it can lead to more severe courses of illness with blood poisoning and meningitis," warns the Federal Office.

In pregnant women, damage to the unborn child can occur even without symptoms. Individuals who have consumed this food and experience severe or persistent symptoms should consult a doctor and be tested for a possible listeria infection. Pregnant women who have consumed this food should also seek medical treatment and advice even without symptoms.

"All affected batches were immediately removed from sale and both products are currently unavailable in our online shop for consumer protection reasons," the manufacturer states.

Customers should under no circumstances consume the two cheese alternatives. The manufacturer regrets the recall and apologizes for the inconvenience caused.
