TheImportanceOfTheMicrobiomeInCosmetics-ISO17516
In February 2021, the Microbiome II Joint Regulatory-Industry Working Group (Microbiome II JWG) was established. It has two main tasks:
- The creation of a common vocabulary on microbiome-related topics in cosmetics
- The review of the current microbiological limits for products containing intentionally living microorganisms
The proposed definitions and terms aim to promote a clear understanding of microbiome-related concepts in the cosmetics industry. These are not legally binding but serve as guidelines in the cosmetics industry. They include the following terms, among others:
- "Microbiota" = microorganisms in a particular environment
- "Microbiome" = microbial community in a defined habitat
- "Skin microbiome" = microbiome present on the skin
For the microbiological assessment of cosmetics, limits of DIN EN ISO 17516 are applied. These are not applicable to intentionally added microorganisms (probiotics) and an individual assessment is required.
