ECHA – Harmful Substances in Cosmetics
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) tested approximately 4500 cosmetic products in 13 European countries for the presence of potentially critical substances between November 2023 and April 2024. The report is now available online.
The agency mainly found these substances in eyeliners and lip liners, but hair conditioners and hair masks were also affected. Detected substances included Perfluorononyl Dimethicone and D5 (Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane).
The first compound is a substance from the PFAS group. PFAS are very durable and persistent chemicals that have already been detected in the human body. It is highly probable that PFAS will be banned for use in cosmetics in the future.
