European Commission: Approval of a variety of novel foods at the beginning of the year

The European Commission has, at the beginning of the year, approved some novel foods through a thorough safety examination by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which are mainly concerned with protein alternatives. These include the house cricket, grain mold beetle, vitamin D2 mushroom powder, and fermented pea and rice protein. The form in which these novel foods can now be used and in which foods they may be applied is explained by, for example, the Food Association. For a period of five years, the applicant companies are initially allowed to market the novel foods.

Those who want to know whether a product contains novel foods should now pay close attention to the ingredients list. Products containing novel foods do not need to be conspicuously labeled and therefore do not differ visually from conventional products. People with allergies to crustaceans, shellfish, or house dust mites should be cautious with insect-based foods. Edible insects can trigger cross-allergies
